BALACLAVA – WHAT A REGULAR DAY
The garbage man curses because there’s nothing left to collect, then curses again the next morning because there’s far too much. A landlord turns up wanting the rent now. An old man down the block announces he loves his neighbour, and a kid comes out to his dad at the bottom of the stairs. BALACLAVA’s “WHAT A REGULAR DAY” stacks up these street-level snapshots like a sitcom on fast-forward, flipping from awful to beautiful and back, while the chorus belongs to someone running on fumes: ready to absorb another blow, half-threatening to quit, still convinced he’s on the right track. Jonathan Dylan Joyce wrote and recorded it alone in his Queens basement during an August 2023 run of one song a day, and the deadline shows in the best way: new wave-tinged lo-fi punk with no time to overthink anything. Lead single from MONEY GLITCH, out January 22 on Mothland.
